Meet Sabrina

Hello there! I’m Sabrina, mom of 4, city girl turned unexpected gardener. Join me as I figure out how to gain food freedom and show you how to be more self sufficient! Read more about me here.

The Unexpected Gardener
The Unexpected Gardener

You don’t need a huge amount of land or animals to live a homestead life. The modern definition of homesteader is “lifestyle of self sufficiency” and we will talk about all things that make you get closer to that. I’m a city girl that learned self sufficiency skills and I am determined to start a food revolution, teaching others to start right where you are.
Things could get salty as we explore topics like gardening, sourdough, the broken food system and breaking free of the system that wants to keep us obedient.

In a world that moves too fast…and is getting mo In a world that moves too fast…and is getting more and more dark,
gardening is a quiet act of resistance.

Planting seeds reminds us that life doesn’t rush.
That growth takes time.
That nourishment can come from our own hands.

And honestly?
Choosing to grow food — even just a little — is also a gentle rebellion against a broken system we’ve all been taught to depend on.

A system where food travels thousands of miles,
where health feels out of reach,
where convenience replaces connection.

The garden is a way of saying:
🌱 I want something different.
🌱 I want to know where my food comes from.
🌱 I want to rely less on what doesn’t serve me.

Self-sufficiency isn’t about perfection or isolation.
It’s about resilience.
It’s about remembering we still have the ability to provide, to grow, to return to the soil.

The garden is quiet…
but it is powerful.

Welcome to Unexpected Gardener 🤍 I’m the fac Welcome to Unexpected Gardener 🤍

I’m the face and hands behind this space — a wife to my best friend of 30 years, mom of four, grandma to one, Jesus follower, and a former city girl who never planned on growing food… until I did.

I wasn’t raised gardening or homesteading. Everything I know came from trial, error, dirty hands, and choosing a slower, more intentional life.

Today, I grow on just .18 acres, which is exactly why Unexpected Gardener exists — to prove you don’t need a homestead to grow real food. Small yards, raised beds, patios, and containers absolutely count here.

Through Unexpected Gardener, I teach families across North Carolina (and beyond) how to:
🌱 grow food — even in small spaces
🍞 bake real sourdough from scratch
🥕 cook and eat seasonally
🏡 build confidence in the kitchen
🤍 live slower, more intentionally, and more connected

This is a space for beginners, the overwhelmed, the “I kill everything” folks, and anyone craving a deeper connection to their food and home.

If you’ve ever thought “I can’t do this” — I’m here to show you that you can.

Welcome to the garden.
You belong here.
January is the perfect time to learn sourdough. H January is the perfect time to learn sourdough.

Here’s why most people don’t realize it’s easier in winter 👇
Cool weather means your starter rises slower and your dough ferments more gently — which makes sourdough far more forgiving and way less stressful to learn.

No rushing. No panic. No “I ruined it.”

Sourdough gives you a calm rhythm, real nourishing food, and confidence in your kitchen — even if you’ve never baked before.

You just need someone to teach you — and that’s what I do.

I’m teaching hands-on sourdough classes where you’ll leave confident and ready to bake at home.
